Terroir: Le Destet
The Cartiers - Brothers Luc and Frédéri together with Luc's daughter Eve, produce stunning natural organic wines at the family's vineyard in the Parc Naturel des Alpilles. Almost equidistant between Avignon, Arles and Salon-de-Provence, this is truly one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
Nicolas Cartier inherited the 18th century farmhouse that used to belong to Pierredon Abbey just North of the hamlet of Le Destet. Having historically followed a mixed, subsistence agriculture, the Cartiers started planting vines in 1950 and moved in to dedicated (and organic) wine and olive oil production in the 1970s.
Inspired by the approach and the precepts of the 'Nature & Progres' organisation that had been set up in 1964 (and certified organic since 1980) the family have seen themselves as guardians of their terroir and have developed the Mas de Gourgonnier with enormous respect for their landscape and their locality.
With their 47 hectares (115 acres) of vines on the stony clay and limestone scree the Cartiers grow Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Mourvedre and Cabernet Sauvignon for their reds under the AOC Les Baux de Provence and Sauvignon blanc, Grenache blanc and Rolle for their whites released as AOC Coteaux d’Aix en Provence.
