Region: Portugal - Lisbon
Terroir: Sierra de Montejunto
The Quinta do Convento de Nossa Senhora da Visitação combines historic traditions and modern methods with extraordinary elegance.
Wine production here was only re-started by Cristina Albuquerque in 2004 following a 10-year programme of restoration of the house and estate on the site of which Gonçalo de Albuquerque, Lord of Vila Verde dos Francos (and father of the more famous Alfonso) had originally built a Convent here in the mid fifteenth century.
The modern Albuquerques have developed a wonderful 40acre (16hectare) vineyard on the slopes of the Sierra de Montejunto and installed an extraordinarily modern production facility in this historic setting. Initially planted with Touriga Nacional vines, Portuguese white varieties Arinto and Fernão Pires alongside French Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon vines have allowed production of excellent quality white wines too.
The vines are cultivated along non-interventionist principles and with only very light organic fertilisers on the estate's low-yield terroir, relentlessly manual traditional harvesting ensures only the highest quality grapes are used at optimal ripeness.
The results are spectacular.
