Jean and Martine David produce the cuvée Le Beau Nez from their small 17 hectare (42 acre) estate in Seguret, right in the picturesque heart of the Côtes du Rhône. Having always been organic in their approach, they have been certified organic since 1987 and have adopted many of the principles of biodynamic production with a natural, non-interventionist handmade approach and a total dedication to their terroir and to their Côtes du Rhône traditions.
In 'Le Beau Nez' (named in honour of both Jean's beret - bon net, geddit? - which features on the new vintage's labels and of course his nose too), the Davids have gone a step further by making this Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, and Syrah grape blend (from parcels of vines on the lower slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail) without sulphur as well. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and without de-stemming in stainless steel and aged in concrete vats, this cuvée is then bottled without fining or filtration.
Their Beau Nez is, therefore, a close to black colour, with a particularly fine nose laced with liquorice and intense flavours of fresh black fruit and berries, delivering great freshness as well as complex spicy overtones.
The Davids set out to realise the purest expression of their native Côtes du Rhône grape varieties: in Le Beau Nez they have achieved this objective with style and elegance in abundance. We can attest that it makes a perfect match for a shoulder of lamb, slow-roasted with rosemary and lots of garlic, served with pommes boulangères.
