According to the textbooks, Chinon is the most genteel of the three Cabernet Franc appellations in Touraine. That said, there is (in our view) a worrying trend of many Chinon producers to make atypical Chinon, full, dark and broody. Not necessarily bad wine, just not Chinon! Fortunately, however, Philippe Brocourt’s Les Coteaux bucks the trend, being bright, fresh, elegant and full of cherry flavours, with an intriguing hint of pencil shavings on the nose. Still definitely Cab Franc, though!
